Flights:
Many companies offer direct flights to Costa Rica from the U.S., Europe, and South America. There is a $26 departure tax fee when leaving Costa Rica. You can also get to Costa Rica via land from Nicaragua and Panama.
Costa Rica is only 2-4 hours' flight away from popular destinations in the U.S. (e.g. Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, New York) so you can easily combine a trip to Costa Rica with a trip to the U.S. There are relatively cheap flights from many places in the U.S. to Costa Rica, including low cost airline flights which cost under 200 dollars per person, one way.

Driving:
The roads in Costa Rica are old and badly-constructed. There are big holes even in the main roads, and quite a few are dirt roads. Those who are not up to the challenge should not rent a car, but rather, use the excellent and efficient private shuttle services available all over the country. These will take you to your destinations safely and comfortably. Costa Rica also has great public transportation.
Those who prefer to rent a car will have to rent a good 4-wheel drive and purchase every kind of insurance possible.
